Late Figwort

Scrophularia marilandica

Late Figwort, also called Carpenter's Square, is a perennial forb that stands out in the garden with its architectural structure and intriguing flowers. It typically grows 3 to 6 feet tall, featuring coarse, green leaves and distinctive square-shaped stems. From midsummer to early fall, it produces small, globular, dark red to maroon flowers arranged in branching panicles. These flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Late Figwort thrives in partial shade to full sun and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is often used in woodland gardens, naturalized areas, and along borders where its height and unique floral display can be appreciated.

Ecological Benefits

Maintenance Tips

  • Prefers evenly moist soil; water regularly to maintain moisture, especially in dry conditions.
  • Cut back in late winter to early spring to manage growth and remove any dead or damaged stems.
  • Thrives in loamy soils but is adaptable to clay and sandy soils if drainage is adequate.
  • Apply a layer of organic mulch to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Monitor for pests and diseases, though late figwort is generally low-maintenance and disease-resistant. Be aware of its potential to spread in favorable conditions.
