Long-Beaked Sedge
Carex sprengelii
Long-Beaked Sedge is one of the best sedges for a garden. It forms an upright fountain of fine green leaves. The seedheads are very attractive, resembling heads of wheat that nod gently on fine stems. The seeds feed fall migrating birds on their journey to their overwintering grounds. A nice alternative to clump grasses for a shade garden. If the plant flops in the spring or summer, it can be cut back and it will regrow. Divide every few years to prevent a hollow center from forming.
