Northern Bayberry

Morella pensylvanica

Northern Bayberry is a hardy and adaptable shrub that typically grows 5 to 10 feet tall. It is noted for its dense, rounded habit and leathery, dark green leaves, which release a distinctive spicy fragrance when crushed. In late spring to early summer, inconspicuous greenish-white flowers appear which develop into clusters of small, waxy, gray berries that coat the stems in autumn and persist through the winter. These berries have a lovely scent and are famously used to make bayberry candles. They are a crucial winter food source for bird species such as tree swallows and eastern bluebirds. Northern bayberry's ability to thrive in poor soils and its salt tolerance make it an excellent choice for coastal areas, erosion control, and naturalized plantings.

Ecological Benefits

Maintenance Tips

  • Tolerates drought once established; water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system.
  • Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the shrub and encourage vigorous growth. Can be pruned heavily if needed.
  • Adapts to a wide range of soil conditions, including sandy, rocky, and clay soils; prefers well-drained soils.
  • Apply a layer of mulch to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and provide nutrient-rich organic matter.
  • Low maintenance; monitor for pests and diseases, but generally resistant to major problems.
