Plains Oval Sedge
Carex brevior
With its small, upright growth form, Plains Oval Sedge makes an attractive border or matrix for taller plants. This plant greens up early in spring and sports small golden seedheads in the fall. The foliage feeds grasshoppers, and the small, pineapple-shaped seed heads are consumed by a variety of birds. Plains Oval Sedge can handle wet and dry soils, making it a good plant for rain gardens.
