Poke Milkweed

Asclepias exaltata

Poke Milkweed, also called Tall Milkweed, can reach heights of around 5 feet and enjoys life on partially shaded side. Its relatively large, oval leaves grow in stark contrast to its delicately drooping clusters of bright white to cream flowers, which bloom in early Summer. Like other milkweeds, Poke Milkweed provides essential support to Monarch Butterflies, which lay their eggs solely on milkweed species. Take your time with any transplants of this species as they can go into dormancy early, and tend to really start shining in their second year.

Ecological Benefits

Maintenance Tips

  • Prefers soils with average / balanced moisture; water regularly but ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
  • Minimal pruning required; deadheading spent blooms can encourage further flowering.
  • Divide clumps in early spring to promote health and control growth.
  • Monitor for pests such as aphids and milkweed bugs, and diseases like powdery mildew. Handle plant maintenance carefully, though, to avoid harming monarch caterpillars.
New transplants can stress and head into dormancy early. Mark locations and monitor into the following year.
