Prairie Blazing Star
Liatris pycnostachya
Prairie Blazing Star sends up a whimsical wands of fuzzy pink-purple flowers in midsummer, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. This is a particularly striking Blazing Star, with large flowerheads held on feathery stems. It makes an excellent addition to vase. Flowerheads turn fluffy and brown with seeds in winter, resembling cattail seedheads. Goldfinches are fond of the seeds. Prairie Blazing Star can flop, especially in rich soils, so support with tall neighbors or stakes.
