Bromus kalmii
Prairie Brome, also known as Kalm's brome, is a native perennial grass prized for its graceful appearance and ornamental qualities. Its slender stems rise above tufts of fine-textured foliage, bearing airy panicles of delicate flowers that dance in the wind. Blooming from late spring to early summer, Prairie Brome adds dynamic movement and texture to garden landscapes, particularly in mixed borders or naturalistic settings. Maintenance Tips
- While tolerant of drought once established, prefers consistently moist soil, especially during periods of prolonged drought. Water deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth.
- Cut back old foliage and spent flower stems to the base in late winter or early spring to promote fresh growth and maintain a neat appearance.
- Divide mature clumps every 3-4 years in early spring to rejuvenate growth and prevent overcrowding.
- Allow some seedlings to naturalize for a more spontaneous look or remove them to control spread.
