Rattlesnake Master
Eryngium yuccifolium
Though Rattlesnake Master is at home in Midwestern prairies, its blue-gray color and upright, spear-shaped leaves make it look like a plant you'd find in the desert! Its blooms are also unique. In mid summer, constellations of spiky white orbs hover over the plants. Rattlesnake Master can seed prolifically on bare open soil, but self-seeding is low if there is mulch or if the garden has grown in. Rattlesnake Master needs the support of nearby plants to remain upright, so it may need staking in the first few years while the garden establishes.
