River Oats
Chasmanthium latifolium
So named because they resemble the coasts' sea oats, River Oats are at home in lightly shaded areas along rivers, ponds, and other moist places. In early summer, large seeds emerge on nodding branches, changing color from green to pink to gold as the season progresses. A short grass that pairs well with other short, vigorous plants. River Oats can spread, so pull seedlings and divide the plant every few years to keep its growth in check. In low-nutrient soils, river oat leaves may yellow, especially by the end of the year. Compost or fertilizer can be added to help the plant stay green.
