Rough Blazing Star
Liatris aspera
Rough Blazing Star is prairie denizen whose unique purple flower stalks add charm to any garden. It is drought tolerant, but for wet soils a better choice would be Dense Blazing Star (Liatris spicata). The flowers are attractive to native bees and butterflies, and birds eat the seeds in the winter. The flowers look lovely in a vase and keep their purple hue in dried arrangements. Rough Blazing Star is more compact than other blazing stars and is less likely to flop, although it does benefit from support from neighboring plants, especially when grown in rich soils.
