Steeplebush

Spirea tomentosa

Steeplebush, also commonly known as Hardhack or Meadowsweet, is a hardy deciduous shrub that reaches 2 to 4 feet in height. It is highly valued for its upright clusters of flowers (reminiscent of colorful steeples) that add a burst of color to the landscape. The flowers are not only visually appealing but also attract a host of pollinators, including butterflies and native bees. Steeplebush prefers acidic, moist soils and is often found in wet meadows and along streambanks, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens and other moist areas. The shrub's leaves turn a golden yellow in the fall, providing additional seasonal interest.

Ecological Benefits

Maintenance Tips

  • Thrives in moist conditions; water regularly to maintain wet or consistently moist soil.
  • Prune in late winter to early spring to remove old flower heads and encourage bushy growth.
  • Best in acidic, well-drained soils but can tolerate heavier, clay-rich soils if moisture is consistent.
  • Apply a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Monitor for leaf spot and rust, which can occasionally affect the foliage, particularly in humid conditions.
