Stiff Coreopsis
Coreopsis palmata
Stiff Coreopsis is one of the first coreopsis to bloom, sending up large, sunny yellow flowers in early summer. The flowers are loaded with nectar and are often used in prairie restorations because they feed so many bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Dead head spent flowers to prolong the bloom, or leave them to form seeds for the birds. Stiff Coreopsis spreads in the garden, but will not outcompete neighboring plants. This plants can form large masses in open areas, or fill in gaps in a matrix or dense planting. Foliage can develop white spots that will not harm the plant. If the plant flops, it can be cut back to the ground if desired.
