Stiff Goldenrod
Solidago rigida
A stunning goldenrod. The plant produces vertical stalks with prominent upright leaves that grow quite large at the base of the plant. The leaves are an attractive silver-green that fade into orange and red in fall. In late summer, Stiff Goldenrod has large, flat flower clusters of brilliant yellow. Seeds are excellent winter bird food, but uneaten seeds can grow into many seedlings. Pull seedlings or remove seedheads to limit spread. Still goldenrod is drought tolerant, but may develop tired foliage in stressful years.
