Swamp Rose Mallow
Hibiscus moscheutos
Swamp Rose Mallow is a big plant with a big impact. The plant forms a shrub-like mound that regrows each year and blooms in mid-summer. It is a type of hibiscus with white or pink flowers than can reach 10 inches wide. Normally found in wetlands, it thrives in wet or average soils. It can be slow growing at first and is late to emerge in spring, but after this it grows quickly. Japanese Beetles can be a problem some years. If damage becomes unsightly, pick off beetles and drop them into a solution of soapy water.
