Sweet Woodreed

Cinna arundinacea

Sweet Woodreed, also known as Stout Woodreed, is a perennial grass that grows up to 3 to 5 feet tall. This species features fine-textured, green foliage that forms dense, upright clumps. In late summer to early fall, it produces slender, wispy flower spikes that have a soft, feather-like appearance. These seed heads persist into the winter, providing visual interest and food for birds. Sweet Woodreed thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, edges of streams or ponds, and as an understory plant in shaded landscapes.

Ecological Benefits

Maintenance Tips

  • Prefers consistently moist soil; water regularly to maintain optimal moisture, especially in drier conditions.
  • Cut back in late winter or early spring before new growth starts to keep the planting tidy and encourage vigorous new foliage.
  • Grows best in rich, moist soils; amend with organic matter to improve drainage and fertility if necessary.
  • Apply a layer of organic mulch to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and provide a clean aesthetic.
  • Monitor for signs of stress in extremely dry or sunny conditions, and adjust location or watering practices as needed.
