Sweetbay Magnolia

Sweetbay Magnolia offers a graceful, more understated alternative to the imposing Southern Magnolia. Waxy, creamy white flowers perfume the air with a clean lemony fragrance in late spring and early summer, with occasional blossoms appearing later in the season. Glossy green leaves reveal silvery-white undersides whenever stirred by the wind, creating a beautiful flickering effect. The foliage may remain semi-evergreen in mild climates but is typically deciduous farther north.

Naturally found in swamps, wet woodlands, and along waterways, Sweetbay Magnolia is one of the few magnolias genuinely comfortable in moist or periodically wet soil. It can be grown as a slender small tree or allowed to develop into an open, multi-stemmed specimen for rain gardens, pond edges, and woodland borders. Cone-like fruits split open in fall to reveal vivid red seeds relished by birds and small mammals, while the leaves support Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Sweetbay Silkmoth caterpillars.

• Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment and extended dry periods.
• Apply organic mulch to conserve moisture, keeping it several inches away from the trunk or stems.
• Little pruning is normally required; remove dead or crossing branches and unwanted basal shoots as needed.
• Allow multiple stems to develop for a shrubby form, or selectively remove competing stems while young to create a more traditional single-trunked tree.
