Tall Ironweed

Vernonia gigantea

Giant Ironweed, is a commanding perennial that can tower over the garden landscape, reaching heights of up to eight feet. It produces large, fluffy clusters of bright purple flowers from late summer into early fall, drawing in butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. The plant's strong, upright stems and coarse, dark green leaves make it a focal point in any planting. Well-suited to the back of borders or as a structural component of wildflower meadows, Giant Ironweed thrives in moist, well-drained soils and tolerates periodic wet conditions.

Maintenance Tips

  • Cut back in late winter to early spring to maintain shape and encourage healthy new growth.
  • Divide clumps in early spring every 3-4 years to rejuvenate and manage the size.
  • Allow naturalized spread in appropriate areas or manage seedlings to prevent over-dominance in designed landscapes.
  • Consider staking if taller stems become floppy.
  • Well-established plants may benefit from pruning roughly in half in early summer to reduce overall height if this is an issue.
