Virginia Springbeauty
Claytonia virginica
Virginia Springbeauty is a charming perennial that is one of the first to bloom in spring, typically growing only 6 to 12 inches tall. This plant features pairs of narrow, linear leaves and delicate clusters of small, star-shaped flowers. Each flower is white with playful pink stripes, which makes for a very inviting appearance against the fresh spring greenery. The blooms are not only beautiful but also provide an important early nectar source for bees and butterflies emerging from winter dormancy. Virginia Springbeauty prefers moist, well-drained soils in light shade to full sun, thriving in woodland settings, meadows, and along streambanks.

Maintenance Tips
- Requires moist conditions, especially during bloom and growth periods in the spring.
- No pruning necessary; plants die back to underground tubers after flowering and remain dormant until the next spring.
- Prefers rich, loamy soils but can tolerate a range of soil conditions as long as moisture is consistent.
- Apply a light layer of organic mulch to maintain soil moisture and temperature.
- Protect from late frost and ensure soil does not dry out completely. Minimal pest concerns.
