White Turtlehead
Chelone glabra
The large white flowers of White Turtlehead attract bumblebees, butterflies and the occasional hummingbird. The tubular flowers emerge in late summer and resemble the head of a turtle. It's an important host plant for the uncommon Baltimore checkerspot butterfly. White Turtlehead is often found in wetlands and floodplains. It is thrives in wet gardens and can suffer during a dry spell if it's not watered. When grown in part shade, it can get white spots on the leaves, though this does not harm the plant.
