Wild Blue Phlox
Phlox divaricata
Wild Blue Phlox, also commonly referred to as Woodland Phlox, is a charming addition to any shade or woodland garden, growing steadily if allowed into a carpet of sweet smelling, star-shaped, blue to violet flowers that burst into bloom in spring. This low-growing perennial typically reaches about 12 to 15 inches in height and spreads to form dense mats of semi-evergreen foliage. It thrives under deciduous trees, blending beautifully with ferns and other shade-loving plants. Woodland phlox prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and benefits from a location that receives partial to full shade.
