Zigzag Goldenrod
Solidago flexicaulis
Zigzag Goldenrod adds a needed splash of color to shade gardens. Large, zigzagging leaves are topped with yellow flower spikes in late fall. Zigzag Goldenrod hosts the beautiful Wavy-Lined Emerald Moth. As a caterpillar, this moth places pieces of leaves and flower petals on its back to camouflage itself from predators, so you'll have to look closely to find it! Goldenrods do not cause seasonal allergies, and is an important late-season pollinator food source. Though not as aggressive as some goldenrods, you may need to divide it to keep it from outcompeting more delicate woodland flowers.
