Culver’s Root (Veronicastrum virginicum) is a tall, architectural native perennial that adds grace and vertical structure to garden beds and naturalistic plantings. This 32-plant pack is ideal for those looking to support pollinators while introducing a dramatic, upright form to the garden.
In early summer, Culver’s Root sends up long, spire-like white flower spikes that resemble a candelabra, rising above whorled, star-patterned foliage. These blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. While it may develop powdery mildew, this cosmetic issue doesn’t affect its performance and is easily disguised by planting it among fuller companions.
It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils. In shade or rich soils, it may benefit from staking or an early summer cutback to reduce height and improve form.
Why Choose a Tray of Culver's Root?
- Bold garden structure – Elegant, upright plant with flower spires.
- Pollinator-friendly – Blooms buzz with activity in early summer.
- Versatile in sun or part shade – Can be staked or cut back to control height.
Plant Culver’s Root where you want height, elegance, and pollinator action, and watch it grow into a long-lived centerpiece in your native garden.
- Well established plants can benefit from a "Chelsea Chop" - trim growing stems roughly in half in late spring to reduce overall height and improve business
- Taller stems, especially in partial shade, may benefit from staking to maintain structure
- Consider deadheading spent flowers to prolong bloom time
