Goldie's Wood Fern
Goldie's Wood Fern brings a bold, architectural presence to shaded gardens. Broad, gracefully arching fronds rise from a slowly expanding crown and can reach 3–4 feet tall, giving this native fern considerably more visual weight than many familiar woodland species. Its substantial form makes it especially effective as a backdrop for smaller ferns, sedges, spring ephemerals, and other shade-loving natives.
Naturally found in rich, moist forests and seepage areas, Goldie's Wood Fern performs best in partial to full shade with humus-rich soil and reliable moisture. A short creeping rhizome allows mature plants to develop gradually into impressive clumps without becoming overly aggressive, while deer and rabbits generally leave the foliage alone. The name Dryopteris goldiana is also still encountered, although Dryopteris goldieana is the currently accepted spelling used by Kew.
Why Choose Goldie's Wood Fern:
- Large arching fronds create dramatic woodland structure
- Excellent for partial to full shade
- Thrives in rich, consistently moist soils
- Slowly develops into substantial, long-lived clumps
-
Generally resistant to browsing by deer and rabbits
Plant in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil and avoid allowing established plants to dry out for extended periods. Remove old or damaged fronds in late winter or early spring before fresh growth emerges.
- Plant in humus-rich medium to moist soil protected from hot afternoon sun and drying winds.
- Avoid unnecessary transplanting once mature, and remove old fronds in late winter if desired.
