About this Plant

Indian Blanket, also known as Firewheel, delivers bold, flame-colored blooms with very little fuss. Its daisy-like flowers feature deep red centers and petals tipped in golden yellow, creating a warm, cheerful display above softly textured gray-green foliage. Blooming often begins in late spring and can continue into fall, especially when spent flowers are removed or seasonal rain encourages fresh growth.

Native to prairies, plains, roadsides, and other open habitats, Indian Blanket thrives in full sun and lean, well-drained soil. It is usually grown as an annual or short-lived perennial, but it readily reseeds in favorable conditions, returning year after year as colorful colonies. Its nectar- and pollen-rich flowers attract native bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects, making it a strong choice for pollinator gardens, meadow plantings, slopes, and water-wise borders.

Why Choose Indian Blanket?

Brilliant red-and-yellow flowers provide long-lasting color
Supports bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects
Thrives in hot, sunny, low-water conditions
Reseeds readily for a natural meadow effect
Excellent for slopes, borders, roadsides, and pollinator plantings

Deadhead spent flowers to extend bloom, or leave some seed heads to encourage natural reseeding. Plant in full sun with well-drained soil, and avoid overly rich or wet sites.

Maintenance Tips

Plant Indian Blanket in full sun and well-drained soil, avoiding rich fertilizer and frequent irrigation that can produce weak, floppy growth.
Deadhead periodically to encourage continued flowering, but leave some late-season seed heads standing so the plant can reseed and return in future years.
