Red-Osier Dogwood

Red-Osier Dogwood is a rugged yet beautiful native shrub prized for its vibrant red stems that shine brightest in winter, offering eye-catching contrast against snow or dormant foliage. Throughout spring and summer, it bears clusters of creamy white flowers followed by white to bluish berries that are beloved by birds and other wildlife. Come fall, the deep green foliage transitions to dramatic reds and purples.

Growing 6 to 9 feet tall, Red-Osier Dogwood is a natural choice for rain gardens, hedgerows, and wetland edges. It thrives in moist soils but is surprisingly adaptable, making it a powerful option for both ecological restoration and ornamental use.

Why choose Red-Osier Dogwood?

• Four-season beauty, with standout red stems in winter and colorful fall foliage.

Maintenance Tips

• Prune 1/3 of stems to the ground every 2–3 years in late winter to encourage fresh red growth.
• Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
• Water during dry spells, especially when young.
• Can spread by suckers—cut or dig unwanted shoots to contain it if needed.
• Best color comes from new stems, so regular renewal pruning improves appearance.
