June Grass
June Grass (Koeleria macrantha) is a compact, cool-season native grass that brings fine texture, seasonal contrast, and ecological value to sunny, dry gardens.
In early summer, this grass sends up slender stems topped with fluffy, cream-colored seed plumes that sway gracefully among spring and early-summer wildflowers. Though modest in size, June Grass adds visual softness and contrast to bold blooms and serves as a valuable food source for herbivorous insects, including native grasshoppers.
As summer heat intensifies, June Grass may go dormant, quietly fading until it re-emerges the following spring. It thrives in dry, well-drained soils and dislikes excessive moisture, making it a great fit for drought-tolerant or xeric gardens.
Why Choose a Tray of June Grass?
- Cool-season texture – Early plumes pair beautifully with spring wildflowers.
- Drought-tolerant – Perfect for dry, sandy, or rocky soils.
- Wildlife support – Host plant for herbivorous insects.
Plant June Grass in full sun and well-drained soil, and enjoy a graceful, resilient native grass that quietly supports the ecosystem while adding beauty to the garden.
- In regions with cool summer climates, June Grass may remain green through the fall. However, in regions with hot and humid summers, this plant will go dormant and reemerge in the spring.
