About this Plant

Big Blue Sage is a statuesque native perennial known for its airy stems topped with clear blue flowers that bloom from late summer into fall. Standing 3 to 5 feet tall, it brings movement and color to late-season plantings just when many gardens begin to fade. The slender, lance-shaped foliage adds a fine texture to the garden, while the brilliant azure blooms draw a wide variety of bees, butterflies, and even hummingbirds.

Native to prairies and open areas, Big Blue Sage thrives in full sun and lean, well-drained soils. Its open habit and bold color make it perfect for prairie-style gardens, sunny borders, and mixed native plantings where it can sway gracefully in the wind without overwhelming its neighbors.

Why Choose Big Blue Sage?

Late-season blooms offer essential nectar for pollinators
Striking blue flowers add rare color to native plantings
Drought-tolerant and low-maintenance once established
Provides food for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds
Great for prairie gardens, meadows, and sunny borders

Stems may benefit from support or the Chelsea chop in early summer to reduce flopping. Cut back in late fall or leave standing for winter interest.

Maintenance Tips

Cut back in early spring to promote vigorous new growth and maintain shape.
Prefers well-drained, even sandy soils; avoid wet, heavy soils.
Divide every few years in early spring to rejuvenate clumps and maintain vigor.
Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a second flush of flowers.
