About this Plant

Texas Betony offers a rare and useful mix of brilliant flower color and shade tolerance. Slender stems rise above a leafy basal clump, carrying whorls of bright red, tubular flowers that can bloom for months when conditions are favorable. Its soft, lightly textured foliage adds a relaxed woodland feel even between bloom cycles.

Native to the southwestern U.S. and Mexico, Texas Betony grows naturally along woodland edges, shaded slopes, and protected canyons. It performs beautifully beneath open tree canopies, along shaded pathways, and in borders with morning sun or filtered light. Hummingbirds are especially drawn to the nectar-rich flowers, while bees and other pollinators also visit through the extended bloom season.

Why Choose Texas Betony?

Bright red tubular flowers are excellent for hummingbirds
Tolerates partial shade better than many flowering natives
Long bloom period in favorable growing conditions
Soft foliage adds texture to woodland-style plantings
Great for shaded paths, open tree canopies, and pollinator borders

Plant Texas Betony in well-drained soil with filtered light, morning sun, or afternoon shade. It appreciates occasional moisture, especially in hot weather, but avoid soggy winter conditions and thin spreading colonies as needed.

Maintenance Tips

Plant Texas Betony in partial shade or morning sun with well-drained soil.
Provide occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Remove spent flower stems to encourage repeat bloom.
Divide established colonies or remove wandering shoots if the plant begins spreading beyond its intended area.
