About this Plant

In late summer, Obedient Plant comes into its own with dense spikes of tubular, pink blossoms stacked neatly along sturdy stems. These blooms aren’t just showy—they’re shaped perfectly for bumblebees, who clamber in and out with enthusiasm. The common name comes from a quirky trait: you can gently bend the individual flowers, and they’ll “obediently” stay in place.

This native perennial thrives in full sun and moist soils, making it an ideal candidate for rain gardens, wet meadows, or low-lying garden beds. But be warned—despite its name, Obedient Plant is a vigorous spreader via rhizomes. With the right placement and a bit of seasonal control, its bold structure and long-lasting flowers can bring major impact to pollinator-friendly plantings.

Why Choose Obedient Plant?

Provides vibrant pink color in late summer
Beloved by bumblebees and other pollinators
Adaptable to rain gardens and moist soil conditions
Strong vertical structure for borders or meadow designs
Fun floral trait adds whimsy and charm

Divide clumps every few years and pull unwanted shoots to control spread. Cut back stems after bloom to encourage tidy regrowth.

Maintenance Tips

Well established Obedient Plants may benefit from a "Chelsea Chop" - prune growing stems in half in late spring or early summer to reduce overall height and improve bushiness
If floppy, taller stems can be staked to improve appearance
Spent flowers can be deadheaded to prolong overall bloom time
Watch for seedlings by year two or three and on as they may need to be policed to keep this plant from spreading somewhat aggressively
