About this Plant
American Witch-Hazel adds unexpected magic to the late-season garden. Just as most plants are fading, it unfurls fragrant, spidery yellow blooms in late fall to early winter—often after its golden foliage has dropped. These late flowers support fall-flying pollinators and lend striking beauty to woodland edges and naturalized borders. With a rounded, vase-like habit and a mature height of 15–20 feet, it functions equally well as a tall shrub or small understory tree.
Why choose American Witch-Hazel?
- Unmatched late-season interest with fragrant yellow blooms appearing after most other flowers have finished.
- Supports late pollinators, including fall-active bees.
- Great for woodland gardens and understory plantings.
-
Versatile form that works as a large shrub or small ornamental tree.
Maintenance Tips
- Prune in early spring if shaping is needed, before new growth emerges.
- Mulch annually to retain moisture and support the shallow roots.
- Avoid alkaline soils—witch-hazel prefers slightly acidic, well-drained conditions.
-
Water during droughts, especially while young or during establishment.
Maintenance Tips
- Moderately drought-tolerant once established; water regularly in its first few growing seasons.
- Prefers well-drained, loamy, acidic soils; mulch to maintain soil moisture and temperature.
- Monitor for pests like aphids and diseases such as powdery mildew, though generally low-maintenance.
