About this Plant
Virginia Sweetspire brings fragrance, fall color, and pollinator appeal to the garden. In late spring to early summer, it produces arching sprays of fragrant white flowers that draw butterflies and bees. As the season progresses, its glossy green foliage transitions into a show-stopping mix of deep red, burgundy, and orange in fall—often lasting well after other shrubs have faded. With its manageable size and graceful shape, it’s an excellent fit for borders, rain gardens, or woodland edges.
Why Choose Virginia Sweetspire?
- Long bloom time and pollinator-friendly flowers.
- Brilliant fall color adds seasonal flair.
- Thrives in wet or shady areas where other shrubs struggle.
-
Compact and manageable size for small or large gardens alike.
Maintenance Tips
- Prune after flowering if shaping is needed; avoid cutting in early spring.
- Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
- Tolerates wet soils well, but adapts to average conditions once established.
-
Can sucker lightly to form colonies—cut back unwanted shoots to contain.
Maintenance Tips
- Prefers moist, well-drained soil; tolerates wet conditions well. Water regularly during dry periods to maintain soil moisture.
- Prune after flowering to shape and promote more vigorous growth. This shrub benefits from occasional thinning to enhance its natural form.
- Adapts well to both acidic and neutral soils; thrives in both wet and moderately dry conditions.
- Apply mulch to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and provide a clean appearance.
- Low maintenance; monitor for occasional pest issues and treat as necessary.
