Sweet Azalea
Sweet Azalea, also called Smooth Azalea, brings fragrance, elegance, and pollinator value to woodland gardens. From late spring into early summer, clusters of white to pale pink flowers open above glossy green foliage, releasing a rich clove-like perfume. Long rosy-red stamens extend beyond the petals, giving each bloom a refined, delicate look that feels especially memorable along paths, patios, and shaded garden edges.
Chiefly native to the Appalachian region, Sweet Azalea thrives in dappled light, acidic soil, and consistently moist but well-drained conditions. Its nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators, while its upright, loosely branched form adds graceful structure to woodland edges, mixed borders, rain gardens, and cool sheltered sites.

Maintenance Tips
Plant Sweet Azalea in partial shade with acidic, consistently moist soil that still drains freely. Mulch lightly to keep roots cool, water during dry spells, and prune only after flowering if shaping is needed.
- Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during establishment and periods of drought, but avoid sites where water remains stagnant.
- Apply a layer of organic mulch to conserve moisture and protect its shallow roots, keeping the mulch away from the base of the stems.
- Avoid digging or cultivating beneath the shrub, as its fine, shallow root system is easily disturbed.
- Prune only when necessary and immediately after flowering, before the plant forms the following year’s flower buds.
