Sweetbay Magnolia
Sweetbay Magnolia is a graceful native tree with creamy white flowers, lemony fragrance, and elegant foliage. Waxy blooms appear in late spring to early summer, with occasional flowers later in the season, perfuming the air with a clean citrus scent. Glossy green leaves reveal silvery-white undersides when stirred by the wind, creating a soft flickering effect in woodland borders, rain gardens, and pond-edge plantings.
Naturally found in swamps, wet woodlands, and along waterways, Sweetbay Magnolia is one of the few magnolias genuinely comfortable in moist or periodically wet soil. It can be grown as a slender small tree or allowed to develop into an open, multi-stemmed specimen. Cone-like fruits split open in fall to reveal vivid red seeds eaten by birds and small mammals, while the foliage supports Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Sweetbay Silkmoth caterpillars.

Maintenance Tips
Plant Sweetbay Magnolia in full sun to partial shade with moist, acidic soil, and water during establishment. Prune only as needed to shape the tree or remove damaged branches, ideally after flowering.
- Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment and extended dry periods.
- Apply organic mulch to conserve moisture, keeping it several inches away from the trunk or stems.
- Little pruning is normally required; remove dead or crossing branches and unwanted basal shoots as needed.
- Allow multiple stems to develop for a shrubby form, or selectively remove competing stems while young to create a more traditional single-trunked tree.
