About this Plant

Southern Blue Flag Iris, also called Shreve’s Iris, brings bold structure and elegant color to wet garden spaces. Its upright, sword-shaped leaves add strong vertical texture, while the blue-violet flowers bloom in late spring to early summer, creating a refined focal point along pond edges, rain gardens, and moist borders.

This native iris thrives in consistently moist to wet soils and performs well in full sun to partial shade. Its blooms attract bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators, while its clumping habit helps stabilize soil in low-lying or water-adjacent areas. It’s an excellent choice for gardeners looking to turn a soggy spot into something beautiful and ecologically useful.

Why Choose Southern Blue Flag Iris?

Beautiful blue-violet blooms in late spring to early summer
Excellent for rain gardens, pond edges, and wet soils
Sword-like foliage adds vertical structure
Supports bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators
Helps stabilize soil in moist or low-lying areas

Keep soil consistently moist for best performance, especially during establishment. Divide clumps every few years if they become crowded, and remove old foliage in late winter or early spring.

Maintenance Tips

Best in fertile, moist to wet soils; does not tolerate drought well.
Divide clumps every 3-4 years in early fall to maintain vigor and increase planting stock.
Protect from strong winds and monitor for iris borer and root rot, which can be a concern in overly wet conditions.
