Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a sturdy, clump-forming native grass prized for its upright habit, ornamental seedheads, and year-round visual appeal; ideal for prairie gardens, meadows, and large-scale native landscapes where it brings structure, movement, and wildlife value.
In summer, Switchgrass sends up delicate, airy seedheads that create a soft pink haze above its vertical green foliage. Come fall, the foliage turns brilliant shades of orange, red, and gold, and remains upright and showy through winter, offering cover and seed for birds.
While this grass is a vigorous spreader—best used alongside other bold, competitive natives—it can be easily managed by dividing clumps or removing seedlings every few years. Switchgrass thrives in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay and sandy loam.
Why Choose Switchgrass?
- Four-season interest – Pink seedheads, vivid fall color, and winter structure.
- Bird-friendly – Seeds and shelter support overwintering wildlife.
- Easy to manage – Spreads steadily but controllable with occasional care.
Plant Switchgrass in full sun and average to moist soil, and enjoy a resilient, eye-catching native grass that delivers beauty and habitat through every season.
- Spring special: When switchgrass's new spring growth is a few inches tall, cut back last year's growth
- Consider dividing mature plants to maintain their size and spread
- Consider removing some seedlings each year to control spread
